There is no prerequisite for success in life except for the 100% belief in yourself and your abilities
If you have never taken the time to monitor your thoughts, please go ahead and give it a try. Our brain produces approx. 70,000 thoughts in a day – giving us 70,000 opportunities to be either positive and seal the day, or be lost in negative thoughts and spoil the day.
Even small thoughts like “Oh, why am I not looking my best today?”, “My date hasn’t called back... I hope he still wants to see me”, “Why do I have to work so hard while others have it so easy?” and many more. The point is we sometimes think negatively without even realizing it.
Why does it even matter at all? What can negative thoughts do to our brain?
Let’s say that you’re walking through the forest and suddenly a tiger steps onto the path ahead of you. When this happens, your brain registers a negative emotion — in this case, fear.
Negative emotions program your brain to do a specific action. When that tiger crosses your path, for example, you run. The rest of the world doesn’t matter. You are focused entirely on the tiger, the fear it creates, and how you can get away from it.
In other words, negative emotions narrow your mind and focus your thoughts. At that same moment, you might have the option to climb a tree, pick up a leaf, or grab a stick — but your brain ignores all of those options because they seem irrelevant when a tiger is standing in front of you.
This is a useful instinct if you’re trying to save life and limb, but in our modern society we don’t have to worry about stumbling across tigers in the wilderness. The problem is that your brain is still programmed to respond to negative emotions in the same way — by shutting off the outside world and limiting the options you see around you.
What can positive thoughts do for us?
1- Personality: Positive thinking creates thoughts that create and transform energy into reality. You naturally become a happy and calm person, and don’t get into petty fights nor ruin your life by experiencing feelings of fear, jealousy and hatred.
2- Moods & Attitude: You stay energized and are a more likeable person. Always remember if you are not happy from within, it is impossible to make anyone else happy.
3- Social Interactions & Relationships: You become the “Positive Paula” or “Positive Peter”, who is always desired and welcomed versus her evil twin “Negative Nancy” or “Negative Ned”. Jokes aside, positivity breeds positivity and believe me no one wants to be around someone who is always negative and complaining about things, people or/and situations.
4- Performance: Your positive energy also reflects in your work like – no matter if its working in a hospital, investment fund or a TV show. You take on challenges with a positive attitude and put in the effort because a positive mind knows that good things will come out of it.
5- Health: Stress is the number one cause of deteriorating health, immature ageing of skin, hair fall, sleep deprivation, lack of appetite and million more damaging health issues. Negative thoughts are the reasons behind stress and anxiety.
Now that we understand the importance of Positive Thinking, how do we make sure we practice it?
I believe in the mantra “Practice Positive Thinking Everyday”. It is not something you do once and then all your problems will be fixed. You have to make an effort to try and practice every day.
1- Observe your Thoughts
Take some time during the day, even if it’s only a few minutes, to really observe your thoughts. Try to observe them to find out what is the key problem. Remember, first step to solving any problem is finding out what the problem really is
2- Make a Gratitude List
Make a list of people, things, achievements and anything really – that makes you feel good about yourself and your contributions to this world. Think about your loved ones, who care for you and will go out of their way to make sure you are happy. Think about the great things you have achieved in life – a university degree – a beautiful outdoor patio garden – performed at a concert – anything that means something to you!
At least have 5 items on your list – including people, things and achievements – and be really thankful for them :)
3- Write, Paint, Draw, Plant, Color
Such activities are very therapeutic in nature, and are good for the soul and mind. They give you a way to express your thoughts, feelings, opinions, ideas in your own creative way. It doesn’t need to be something professional – but something that helps you find your peace and calm. It can be as small as writing a few lines a day or taking 5 minutes out to water a plant that you really like in your garden or taking a few minutes to color a drawing with your little cousin / toddler
4- Exercise & Eat Healthy
Stay healthy by eating good and exercising regularly. Again, we are not talking about being the next fitness model on Instagram – but do what works best for you. Sweat out all the negative feelings and emotions. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that leave you feeling happier and relaxed.
5- Smile & Forgive
Smile releases endorphins – the hormones that cause the feelings of euphoria and well-being. Smile lowers stress and anxiety levels, and makes you feel more comfortable. Smiling is also contagious, so chances are that when you smile others will also smile with you :)
Do not hold grudges. Forgive and forget. It may not change the past, but it gives the future a chance.
